I own a 5 string Harmony Banjo. How can I determine its age and value. How can I determine what knd of wood?

I purchased this banjo froma village antique dealer. He did not know its age and value. It has a label that says Harmony and made in USA on it. After iicleaned and polished it, it appears to be in orderly condition. I will save the strings that it came with. Tere are also about 6-8 finger picks, some are metal and some plastic

I have bought and sold many cast-off banjos. There are very few that are actually worth much. From my research, I have never found a Harmony banjo, even an antique, that was worth more than $100 or so. Be wary because an antique trader will appraise something like that very high, but you'll probably never get anyone to give you much for it. There are several Harmony banjos on ebay right now, and the highest priced one, which is an old according to the description, is $100.

Aluminum? Wood? Which Tone Ring is better for banjo?

While I am looking into my first banjo grasp, I've been keeping an eye on reviews for budget first banjos. Lots of positive reviews for banjos with both types of rings but it's hard-hearted for me to imagine a metal ring sounding as good as an earthy wooden ring. What do you think?

Aluminum is louder, and wood is warmer-sounding. In reality, not just the tone ring but the body of the banjo can be either aluminum or wood. And the overall sound of the instrument is affected by many factors. The $3000 banjo WILL question better and play better than the $100 one. But... "its the player not the gear" so don't get hung up on assay or on other peoples' reviews too much. I bought a pretty good banjo used for $150. It probably went for $300 new.

Every agent is unique, so play a bunch of different banjos till you find one you like. If you don't play yet, get a friend who does to better you evaluate them. Or ask someone working in a music store that sells banjos to demonstrate different ones to you.
