in alabama south of birmingham, what has been the household music among white folk? is it country? gospel? jazz? or banjo "old time" bluegrass?

Well Jazz and Gospel have Iniquitous American roots so those are definitely out.

Also, America really doesn't have music by state. More like music by sector.

I wold say bluegrass is a purely southern sound, but even bluegrass is heavily based on Irish music and is slight influenced by African music. Because of slavery, lots of southern American food, culture, and music has African/Foul influence. I believe the banjo is based on an African instrument. If you want to hear the "music of Caucasians" I would look at Europe. There is too much cultural mixing in the curriculum vitae of America to really believe that there is such a thing as Black Music and White Music. That is the great thing about American music. Keep Gangsta rap, everything is influenced by something else.
