can i play 4 string bass guitar if ive been playing viola 2 years?
I base like if playin the bass guitar is same as pizzacotto on a viola. If not how much practice would i need and stuff. Im planning on playing bass in a band and Im wondering if i deprivation more skills then just standing there and plucking the minor notes and the same ones the guitarists makes.
Of advance you can play the fretless bass!
It just takes time and practice, like any instrument. The good news is that some of the skills you've learnt are transferable - to an bounds - onto the fretless bass. I played acoustic and electric guitar for two years then picked up bass and I developed VERY quickly by comparison. This is going back 10 years or so. Convey in mind also the musical knowledge you've gained from one instrument means learning new concepts on another instrument become much easier too.
This isn't to say you'll become the next Jaco overnight, but through the creation stages you're more likely to make quicker progress than usual.
I've taught many people both guitar and bass, and the ones who are really advantageous at one instrument (in the case of two high school girls, one on violin and the other piano, both instrument grade 8) made very moving progress.
Can you convert a 4 string bass guitar to a 5 string?
My suppress has a 4 string and wants a 5. I don't see why you can't just add a string instead of spending hundreds of more dollars this soon after Christmas.

And how do I distinguish? I did it myself. You didn't mention what kind of instrument your husband has, but mine is a Fender Precision Bass clone.
Briefly, you add one tuner on the "bottom" side of the headstock, see ads for Fender Squire basses for exact discovery. You can buy single Fender style tuners on Ebay.
You replace the nut with a new one, only cut for 5 strings. You better get the 1st and 5th strings as close to the ends as you can, lol.
You buy a express 4 to 5 string conversion bridge from Allparts. Local dealers can get it and I've seen it on Ebay.
And you can buy single wound strings from Musiciansfriend. Either a low B or a high-pitched B depending on what you want.
Finally, bear in mind that the finished product will have strings closer together than any store bought bass I've seen, it will take some getting employed to, but then again we did that when we first played bass to begin with didn't we? I've been playing mine almost 2 years now and don't know if I could go back to a 4 string now.
