whats the difference between an open back and resonator banjo?

some are exposed back, some are closed, and some have some kind of resonator on the back. what's the difference?

The resonator helps unbroken the sound from the back of the banjo forward.

What does "resonator" mean on a banjo?

I'm looking at 5-go along with banjos and some of them specify "with resonator". What does that mean, and how does it make it different from any other 5-string?

The resonator is a "support" on the round part of the banjo. This backing reflects the sound back toward the front of the instrument and therefore makes it sound louder/clearer. It is something extra for those people who wish that type of performance. If you are just starting out, you can get one with or without a resonator. It is really up to the individual. It does add extra weight to the instrument as well as price. If you are starting out....see if you can find a good deal in a pawn shop or the adds in a paper. Don't spend a lot of money on a new "named" thingumabob. You may not like the banjo. It isn't for everyone. But if you like it, have fun, good luck and keep smiling.
