Buying a bass guitar?

I hunger to learn how to play bass guitar. I've been playing an acoustic Ovation Celebrity guitar for a little under a year now, but I've always been drawn to bass guitar.

The problem is, is that I want to buy a bass guitar that will last me a while, as a substitute for of buying a cheap one and then figuring it all out and buying a better one a couple months later. Some people say buy an Ibanez, but others say get a Squier bass; everyone has their own conviction. I've been researching for a while online, but still have questions. Here we go.

1. What's the difference between a "Squier by Fender Affinity Series P Bass" and "Squier by Fender Rapport Series J Bass"?

2. Should I consider buying used? eBay?

3. Amps. I have a Fender 15G for my Ovation, but I'm going to need another amp for my bass guitar. Any recommendations? Do I in effect need an amp right away for practice?

4. Everyone says to walk into a shop and try them out/see how they feel, but how are you supposed to do that if you don't know how to accentuate yet? I always feel intimidated by the Guitar Center nearby, are there any questions I could ask them when trying out basses? I know I should just suck it up and try them out, but... >_<

*sough* Basically, I just need a whole lot of help. Any tips or helpful hints or anything would be appreciated at this point.

Thank you in forward movement. ^_^

I be occupied in a Rickenbocker.
My head is a Hartke 3500 Transient Attack Unit
I have two Ampeg Cabinets. Top - two 10" Bottom - 18"
My pedals are Boss ME-6B.

The set up looks and sounds terrifying.

I have 2 guitars, a fender tele and an ovation bass - how do I find out how much they're worth?

I have serial numbers for both but would like to find out what their deal in value and re-sale values are before listing them for sale ... would appreciate any info on how to find this information.

Hi there,
Humongously mercurial possibilities here.

Both these companies have gone through many diverse changes since their inception decades ago. The value of your instruments will depend in general upon some sort of blend between where they fit in this trajectory [what vintage], condition, and current market demand.

Unless they're of very recent quality, not an easy question to get a definitive answer!

Try the home websites of Fender and Ovation for serial number stuff, google telecaster fan league or ovation fan club, so on and so forth [google telecaster serial number, ovation bass serial number, etc].

One quick but tricky notion [not always a clear indicator], do a search on Ebay of the model you have, look in "completed listings", and see what someone paid for one.

But before that you will lack to find out the vintage, which is back to the serial number.

Hope you can find what you need.
