Bass guitar?

Ok, so I got a Brownsville 5-festoon bass for Christmas, and was wondering why there's a 9-volt battery in the back of it. Can anyone help me?

I'm hardly guessing, but does the bass have a built in equalizer? If so, maybe its to power thae equalizer. I'm just guessing though. Or does the bass have a built in pre amplifier? Peradventure its to power that.
