what is the main difference between round wound and flat wound strings on a bass guitar?
The absolute difference would be that round wounds are wound with round strands of wire and flat wounds are wound with flattened strands of wire. Flat woulds are smoother when transitioning up and down the neck and get rid of a lot of the squeak of fingers travelling along the strings, but in exchange they sound a bit tinnier than round wounds.
Bass guitar - other than cost, what are the differences between round wound and flat wound strings?
When I first played bass, 30 years ago, they all had flat wound. Now all new ones have period wound. Will round wound be easier to finger?
Flat wound are smoother to monkeyshines, but lack the tone quality of round wound. My advise would be to use the round wound and get used to them. I won't take that long and there is no comparison in the sound or the individual of the string. Flat wounds aren't used much anymore because they don't ring and give you the true tone of the bass.
